Ask Amber: Nov. 2
I have a CSI: Miami question for you. Delko walked away a couple of episodes ago, as did the medical examiner last season (although she is still seen occasionally in the ER). Is it difficult to work on that set? Calleigh is the only original character left that I like. —Sharon
Amber: I’m not so sure that actors are leaving because it’s difficult to work on the set (although there have been plenty of unproven rumours); I think it’s more the fact that cop procedurals don’t always flex an actor’s chops the way other projects sometimes do. If you think about it, CSI: Miami has been on-air for eight seasons now and it’s only natural that within that time there be some cast changes. Adam Rodriguez, the actor who portrays Delko, has been frank that while CSI was a great opportunity for him to develop his career, he’s looking for new projects now. That includes the Tyler Perry film, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, which was just in theatres, and a guest stint on Ugly Betty.
As for Khandi Alexander, she reportedly left the set because of “issues” with certain aspects of the show, but it couldn’t have been that terrible because as you pointed out, she still comes back, now as an ER doc, every now and again.
And really? You still like Calleigh even though she shot Delko? Interesting …
Hi Amber, one of my favourite shows is Supernatural. I got hooked when my daughter borrowed the DVDs from a friend. This year we got cable, so I was looking forward to watching the new season on TV. However, it only airs on Space at 11 p.m. Wednesdays or 4:30 a.m. Thursdays — at least, these are the only times that I can find it. Why would they give it such a crappy timeslot? Why is it that some shows are repeated several times while others are hard to find at all? I think Supernatural is a great show, but most people have never even heard of it. I think more people would be watching it if it were better publicized. Why isn’t it? I brought the DVDs into work for a friend to borrow and he is on Season 4 after only about a month. He and his wife love it. —Charlene
Amber: It’s quite irritating to leave the fate of a good show in the hands of a network, isn’t it? It sounds to me like you invested in basic cable, but I’m not sure what your plan entails. I do know that in the U.S., Supernatural is a CW property and it airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on that channel, if you subscribe. Space also has it Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET from what I can see, as well as 11 p.m. ET on Thursdays. SunTV and DUSK also seem to pick it up according to the online listings tool on our site.
I will admit (and readers have given me flack for this before) that I have never seen Supernatural. I have the first season on DVD and fully plan on watching it at some point, but there is just so much TV to cover. I do know that its fans are very passionate, though — I’m even flanked by two co-workers here who can’t get enough of it. The problem is that since it doesn’t belong to a major network, it receives minor coverage. The more people have to pay to watch a show, the less watched it becomes.
The good news is that those types of shows are always the ones that will be released on DVD, which is how most people — like you — get hooked in the first place. How many people do you know who actually watched Sex and the City when it was on HBO? Most people I know caught up with syndicated repeats and DVD releases. It just seems to be the norm.
Amber, with Mad Men’s recent Emmy win, are any of the networks (other than AMC, which is in the U.S.) going to air Season 3? Bravo! is currently re-airing Season 1 and it would be great if the new season could be picked up by a Canadian network. I am currently with Cogeco. —Jackie
Amber: Hmmm, well I’m a Rogers girl myself, which makes me one of the lucky ones who can actually watch the series on AMC, or On Demand if I happen to miss it.
You’re seeing the series on Bravo! because that station is under CTVGlobeMedia’s umbrella of stations, and CTV bought the rights to the first two seasons during the writers’ strike so that it could air fresh content. It was believed that network watching Canadians would fall in love with the critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning series, but it wound up flopping. As such, the network didn’t bother investing in the third season; at least no plans to do so have been announced. Unfortunately, you’re either going to have to wait for the DVD release or find it online.
Hi Amber, love your column! Thank you for knowing everything about every show, it comes in handy. Quick question for you: since the new season of Desperate Housewives began I've only seen the one twin. I can't tell them apart so I don't know which one he is — but where did the other one go? Thanks for your help! —Tricia
Amber: Thanks, I love hearing it! As for knowing everything, let me tell you — that’s far from true. I just happen to regularly watch about 35 shows every week and try to keep up with storylines for the rest. I tell you, time-shifting and my PVR are my best friends.
Anyhow, to your Housewives question. I can’t tell Porter and Preston apart either, although I can tell you they are played by real-life twins Charles and Max Carver. Last season, Porter (Charles) had some salacious storylines (what with the older woman affair and the trial for the nightclub fire), but Preston (Max) just kind of hung out in the background. It was mentioned this season that he had taken off to Europe, which makes sense because he and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) argued last season about whether or not he should go to Europe or college.
Most recently, the actor appeared on the season première of The Office as one of the interns. It was driving me crazy where I knew him from and then BAM! Your question helped me answer one of my own. So thank you!
Dear Amber, I really enjoy Bones. It was not on your list of most-watched Canadian shows. I hope it does not get cancelled. It is funny and intelligent. Please advise as to its popularity. Thank you. —Michelle
Amber: Bones is quite popular in Canada, actually. While it didn’t make my list of the 10 most-watched shows so far this year, it did land in the No. 8 spot three weeks ago with about 2.4 million Canadian viewers (according to BBM research). What’s truly amazing about that number is the fact that Global airs the series here on Wednesday nights, a day ahead of the U.S. offering on Fox. Usually when that happens, we see lower numbers — it’s why networks normally take advantage of the U.S. simulcasting and line up their own schedules according to their American counterparts.
Plus, when Bones was renewed last year, Fox inked a two-year deal, so your series isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
That's all for this week!

A TV junkie, Amber will watch just about anything – once. One of her biggest pet peeves is when networks bounce shows around their schedule, leading to an eventual cancellation. While current gems include The Big Bang Theory, The Office, Dexter, True Blood, House, Lost and The Mentalist, she’s still crying over the cancellations of Kitchen Confidential and Pushing Daisies.
Now Amber devotes her time to analyzing the current state of TV and helping readers dissect complicated schedules. She’ll answer a variety of questions about past and present shows, spoilers and casting: anything is — and should be, up for discussion.
