Most of us are lucky television viewers. Lucky in the sense that after a hard day’s work we flip on our flat screens, HDTVs, PVRs and DVRs, sometimes accompanied by a loved one or the coveted TV dinner, and sit back to unwind and watch some mind-numbing concoction that’s been thrown together for us.
And while we appreciate good acting or an emotionally inspiring scene, it’s not too often we marvel at the actual process that goes on in order to bring a series from the head of some random writer, to the final product we’re unwinding to.
We don’t usually think about the producers, show runners, writers, editors and directors that back these projects, nor do we usually take the characters for anything more than face value. It’s only television, after all.
But when you stop to think about it, would Mad Men really have been the same if Lionsgate was unable to secure creator and writer Matthew Weiner for a third season, or would the series have fallen under the watchful eye of another show runner? Has Smallville gotten worse now that the original creators have left, only to sign themselves up for the most surprising follow-up project yet, the Melrose Place pilot remake?
There are certain people who are key to a series’ eventual success, and more often than not they are the biggest multitaskers you’ll ever meet.
