I’m just going to get this out of the way: I didn’t care too much about last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Whew. That took a lot to admit, considering I’m a big fan of the show, but while some of the characters experienced some growth, others appeared completely selfish, to the point that I didn’t want them on my screen.

As Derek took over chief of surgery duties, Richard (it’s weird referring to the character by his first name and not Chief) struggled with the decision to retire or go to rehab. Ultimately, he chose to get help, so here’s hoping he comes back stronger than ever and reclaims his old job.

On his first day as the interim chief, Derek faced the possibility of the hospital being sued after one of Bailey’s patients work up during surgery. Seriously? My. Worst. Nightmare. Watching the patient open her eyes while her guts were exposed was horrifying, and the utter fear and panic in her eyes while Bailey screamed like a loon didn’t help matters. I guess the thing that bothered me the most was how Bailey made it all about, well, Bailey. Naturally, the patient didn’t want to see her, nor did she want Miranda touching her, but all the good doc could do was have a pity party about how it was affecting her. How she’s a good doctor. How her patients always trust her. Blah, blah, blah. Um, you had her open on a table, screaming like a banshee and she was awake. Of course the patient was traumatized. But it wasn’t about Bailey, it was about the patient. Argh. Though it does look like they’ve finally cast a love interest for the sometimes-Nazi. Was it just me, but despite all the drama, were there some sparks between Ben, the anesthesiologist (guest star Jason George), and Miranda?

I’m kind of over the whole Mark/Lexie cheating situation. Can they just kiss and make up or something? Though I did love the end with Mark, Callie and Arizona squished into one bed.

It was nice to see Alex being a doctor, and not just Izzie’s husband. I loved the chemistry between Alex and Arizona (who also broke away from being just Callie’s girlfriend and proved her doctor chops), and it’s nice to see Karev in pediatrics, which viewers never would have guessed five-plus seasons ago.

Finally, for the first time since he joined the ranks of Seattle Grace, Owen annoyed the hell out of me. Cristina put it perfectly: he was trying to screw her into submission. All Dr. Hunt wanted to do was have sex with his girlfriend, anywhere, anytime. Calm down.

While it seemed like he was doing it to keep Cristina and Teddy apart, he made it clear in the end that he was merely trying to connect with her. I always think these two are on the verge of breaking up, so I’m always pleasantly surprised when the writers don’t take the predictable route and have these two hash it out like adults. The last scene, where Cristina opened up to Owen about Burke, was particularly touching, and it’s clear these two are only going to come out of this thing stronger. Let’s hope the same goes for everyone else.
