When I first heard about the new TLC series, Who Are You Wearing?, I thought it had so much potential to be a great addition to the already-established fashion-themed shows on TV today.
Let’s begin with the positives. I thought the theme of the everyday person making it in what has been dubbed the harshest of industries was very relatable. I also enjoyed the presence of a celebrity (Alison Sweeney, The Biggest Loser and Days of our Lives) and thought it spiced things up a bit.
However while watching the first episode, I couldn’t help but feel slightly disappointed. There were too many clichés including boring catchphrases and dramatic pauses that were a little too long. I also found the idle chit-chat between the designers to be overdone. This show had all the token characters — the pot stirrer/drama queen who’s more concerned with everyone else’s work than her own; the young, inexperienced and optimistic designer; and lastly, the designer with low self-esteem who is there to prove to everyone whoever told her she couldn’t make it in the biz was wrong. It all seemed a little too scripted. Maybe a change-up of designers will make it more real. We’ll have to wait and see.
Although I liked the time constraints because it added that necessary tension, a staple in every fashion reality show, I think it may have resulted in poorly made dresses. You can tell on the red carpet that Alison’s dress was not professionally sewn, as threads were loose and some of the seams seemed crooked or out of place.
Overall, I give this show’s debut a seven out of 10 with room for improvement. I will be tuning in to see how the rest of the season goes and I think you should give it a chance. After all, there’s always an adjustment period with every new show. I love the idea of this series and hope that it’s on its way up and not out.
