Grimm has always had a link to Joss Whedon – after all, the NBC monster-of-the-week hit is penned by Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel writers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf. But now that connection may become even stronger.

On a recent conference call, the producers revealed that they want to get Whedon, also of Firefly and Dollhouse, to work on an episode.

“That son of a bitch – he’s got come do one for us!” Greenwalt told press in January. “We would love to him write, direct or do craft service.”

“He’s free. He’s pretty good with a bagel,” Kouf added, with a laugh, noting that Whedon is no stranger to guest-directing. The geek god, who is currently promoting his big-screen adaptation of The Avengers and the long-awaited horror flick Cabin in the Woods, has done episodes of Glee as well as The Office.

“I saw Joss at Comic-Con and didn’t even think to [ask him],” Greenwalt admitted. (Insert the sighs of every fangirl and boy around the world here.)

While Greenwalt and Kouf anxiously await confirmation from their former boss, Grimm fans can look forward to seeing quite a few familiar Whedonverse faces in upcoming episodes. The first one comes this Friday when Angel and Dollhouse actress Amy Acker stops by for a one-instalment stint.

“Amy has a great role … [appearing] like you’ve never seen her before,” Greenwalt shared on the phone. “We’re really excited about it.”

In “Tarantella,” Acker plays a literal and figurative black widow, a sultry man eater whose suitors seem to be dropping like flies. Obviously, Nick (David Giuntoli) and partner Hank (Russell Hornsby) are on hand to investigate.

Later in Grimm’s freshman season, which, as per NBC’s orders, comes out to a solid 22 episodes, Buffy fans will be treated to an appearance by Azura Skye.

Fans will remember her as Cassie Newton, the doomed, psychic teenager from Season 7 of BTVS. After suffering a sudden death in “Help,” she came back as a spirit, visiting Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and sharing messages from her late girlfriend, Tara (Amber Benson), in “Conversations with Dead People.”

“[Azura] plays a bird-like creature with many hidden talents and gifts,” Greenwalt teased to TV Guide Canada. “Nick and Juliette are trying to get out of town, get away from all the madness and they end up helping … madness.”

Skye’s episode does not have a set airdate yet – they haven’t even shot her episode. But Greenwalt and Kouf predicted that it might appear on NBC schedules come April.

You can look forward to more cameos from Whedon alums as the series continues, hopefully into Season 2. When asked if Grimm might follow in Supernatural’s footsteps and reunite co-stars such as Buffy’s Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) and James Marsters (Spike), Greenwalt seemed more than open to the idea.

“I’d love to work with Charisma again and any of the old gang,” Greenwalt revealed. “And when there’s an appropriate part, you know, we would definitely make that choice.”

“We’ve actually been thinking of how we could get [Anthony Stuart Head, a.k.a. Giles from Buffy] into the show,” he added. “We’ve actually thought quite a bit about that.”

Catch Amy Acker’s guest spot on Grimm on Friday, Feb. 10, at 9 p.m. ET on CTV/NBC.
