If you’re a fan of Glee, and still don’t think disco sucks, you should be dancin’ when you hear this news. In an upcoming episode, Fox’s musical comedy is going to put on its boogie shoes and strut its stuff to the soundtrack of the classic film, Saturday Night Fever.
TVGuide.com broke the news Sunday, getting word from show creator Ryan Murphy that he will be working with Bee Gees frontman Barry Gibb on an April episode.
“We’ve never done disco on the show,” Murphy told the site, clearly forgetting about Quinn’s Season 1 take on The Supremes’ dance hit, “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” “But I’m interested in the genius of the Bee Gees.”
This “Emotion”-al announcement comes just weeks before the show’s much-hyped Michael Jackson tribute episode. Over the course of its three seasons, Glee and New Directions have highlighted the songbooks of Madonna, Lady Gaga, Fleetwood Mac and Britney Spears with hour-long instalments.
How deep is Murphy’s love for this particular tribute episode, you ask? Well, he’s considering (jive) talkin’ to Saturday Night Fever’s white suited up poster boy, John Travolta, about making a cameo on the episode.
“I would ask him,” he says. “Travolta and Cory Monteith (Finn) became close friends at a party when Cory told him that he’d seen Broken Arrow 20 times. Travolta sent him an autographed copy of the DVD.” Maybe we’ll have them dance in a Finn dream sequence?”
If they can’t have Tony Manero, maybe they can talk chest hair and really cool medallions with Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake (if you haven’t seen their SNL skits about “The Barry Gibb Talk Show” hit up YouTube right now)? Or perhaps they’ll settle for any number of actors from the clearly superior sequel, Staying Alive? (In that film, our favourite disco-dancing hero moved to New York City and attempted to make it on the Great White Way — via a fictional show called Satan's Alley.)
The songs that will be featured in the episode, which you’d imagine would be called “Night Fever” are still under wraps, but here are a few of our suggestions.
- “More than a Woman” – Will and Emma, most likely as foreplay for the consummation of their adorably innocent, matching lunchbox carrying relationship. Rumour has it they are getting hitched in tonight’s episode “Yes/No.”
- “How Deep is Your Love” – Kurt to Blaine. With that sexy new Warbler sexing Mr. Anderson with his eyes on the regular, Kurt is likely to move to Emerald City permanently, and this song could be his way of confronting his issues.
- “You Should Be Dancing” – Tina to Mike. We know that Mike has sorted out his issue with his dad, but you know more inner turmoil is going to come up when he and Tina have to decide where they’ll be going to post-secondary school. He’ll probably go somewhere for dance, whereas she’ll want to focus on singing. Imagine a slow-downed version of this Gibb brothers classic as Tina comes to terms this.
- “Stayin’ Alive” – All of New Directions. A perfect selection for whatever future competition comes their way. It would also make a sweet montage offset to McKinley High football footage.
- “If I Can’t Have You” – Sam to Mercedes. These two need more songs together, especially since the swim team stud has admitted to having it bad for Troubletones’ belter.
