Turn out the lights, the party’s over. Competition show So You Think You Can Dance Canada has been cancelled.

“The producers of So You Think You Can Dance Canada created four seasons of groundbreaking, high-quality television, delivering on a creative level everything you could ask for as broadcaster, and ending on a creative high note. After four seasons and 92 episodes, CTV has decided to pursue other program strategies," Scott Henderson, vice-president of communications for Bell Media, told TV Guide Canada. "This decision was made after careful consideration, including viewership and economic factors. We remain extremely proud of the legacy of So You Think You Can Dance Canada, including raising the profile of dance in this country.”

The news comes on the heels of Sunday’s Season 4 finale, which saw Jordan Clark beat out Melissa Mitro for the title of Canada’s Favourite Dancer. The Star says Dance Canada averaged a million viewers a week, but it was kept out of the Top 10 in Canada by scripted series such as Combat Hospital, Flashpoint, America’s Got Talent and Big Brother.

“This is a show I’ve loved the most and been the most passionate about,” Sandra Faire, So You Think You Can Dance Canada’s executive producer, told the Star. “I’m very sad it’s been cancelled, for me and for the whole dance community.”

“I’m really upset, because this was a passion of mine,” said judge Tré Armstrong. “It really is such a horrible shame that it’s gone so quickly. Too quickly.”

You have to wonder whether Bell Media, which purchased CTV for $1.3 billion last September, is cleaning house creatively. Dance Canada is the third CTV series to be cancelled in the last several days.

Sitcom Dan for Mayor, starring Fred Ewanuick, and Brent Butt’s Hiccups both had the plug pulled on them last week.
