It looks as though fans and producers of Lost won’t get their wish, which is that the final season would air uninterrupted once it returns early next year.

That’s because ABC has decided it doesn’t want to try and compete with a massive event like the 2010 Winter Olympics when it airs on NBC for two weeks next February, during Sweeps.

So not only will Lost go on a mini-hiatus after only a month of being on the air, but if ABC doesn’t want to air one of its proven midseason hits, does this mean February Sweeps are pretty much shot?

I suppose we’ll have to wait and see what the other networks do, but it sure looks that way for now.

As for Lost, the final season will return sometime in January – the network hasn’t announced an official date or time. Some are predicting the show will air Wednesday nights where Hank and The Middle are currently residing, although ABC has the slight problem that its picked up The Middle, Modern Family and Cougar Town for entire seasons, and having Lost air at 8 p.m. would edge out The Middle and break up what’s proving to be a fairly successful comedy block.

Mind you, Better Off Ted is set to return midseason, and that series would make the perfect Hank replacement. However, doing that would leave Lost the odd man out, which is undoubtedly something the network doesn’t want to do.

In an ideal world, Lost would be paired with newcomer V (if the series proves successful), or FlashForward. But with Grey’s Anatomy and a Dancing With the Stars results show to schedule on Thursdays and Tuesdays respectively, finding a great spot for Lost while maintaining the Wednesday night comedy slate will undoubtedly prove a challenge.
