When I was a little girl, I was fascinated by all things He-Man and She-Ra. I had the entire Castle Greyskull, a She-Ra sword and every action figure possible. For Halloween, I even wanted to be She-Ra one year, but my mother, God bless her, figured He-Man would suffice and sent her little girl trick-or-treating as a man.
The 1987 movie Masters of the Universe starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, Frank Langella as a very convincing Skeletor and a very young Courteney Cox was a welcome addition to my VHS collection, despite the reservations I initially had about a live-action version.
I hold the same reservations about the remake film that’s been on tap since 2007, a hesitation that’s confirmed with the announcement that Warner Brothers and Mattel have split over the project because the companies “didn’t see eye-to-eye on the direction,” according to Variety.
Director John Stevenson is still on board, but producer Joel Silver has exclusive ties to WB and is expected to leave.
Rumours have been swirling for quite some time now, with many speculating whether this film will come to fruition anytime soon, especially after early reports promised a film of substantial magnitude – in its initial stages, Brad Pitt was even rumoured to become the next man of “Power.”
Although creative differences are being cited as the source of the split on the tentatively titled Greyskull, the timing is a little strange. WB recently announced the acquisition of DC Comics, and will undoubtedly focus more on that product rather than partnerships going forth.
For now, Mattel still has several properties linked to WB, including Hot Wheels.
