Dr. Phil Astin, who was the personal doctor of Canadian professional wrestler Chris Benoit, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail, reports the Toronto Star.
Astin, 54, had pleaded guilty to a 175-count federal indictment on Jan. 29, which said he wrote illegal prescriptions to known drug abusers.
According to prosecutors, at least two of Astin's patients died from a drug overdose.
"I am sorry I hurt so many lives," Astin told the court.
In June 2007, officers investigated Astin when Benoit killed himself, his wife and his son in their Atlanta-area home. A medical examiner wasn’t able to determine if the steroids Astin prescribed for the wrestler led to the deaths.
Montreal-born Benoit was known as “The Crippler," The Canadian Crippler" and "The Rabid Wolverine" during his career, which led him to wrestle with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
He was 40 when he died.
