An American Idol without Paula Abdul? That’s a bit like the Osbournes without Sharon, no?

OK! magazine is reporting that Abdul, an Idol judge since the show’s inception in 2002, could be getting ready to leave the mega hit reality show.

“She knows that every season could be her last,” a source told the publication. “Now she's got a new secret venture that she’s really excited about.”

A secret venture? We’re intrigued.

According to OK!, Abdul will “transition” out of Idol to focus her energies on other TV projects. Her last solo show, Hey Paula, was a reality series for Bravo that followed the singer’s day-to-day exploits. Poor ratings led to its demise after one season.

While we can’t believe every story the rumour mill blows our way, there could be credence to Abdul’s departure. American Idol announced in August that the show will introduce a fourth judge, Kara DioGaurdi, when it returns for its eighth season. Could she be Abdul’s eventual replacement?

Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell, who’ve also been with the show since the beginning, will remain in their judging chairs in the upcoming season.

The show returns Jan. 13 on Fox.

It's safe to say Paula won't miss creepy auditioners like Season 7's Paul Marturano!
