What the world needs is more furry yet loveable fictional puppets. Think about it: how could one consider spreading war and pestilence when there’s a rainbow of Fraggles supplying endless hours of amusement?

The Weinstein Co. has apparently adopted this theory, and is planning a big-screen version of the Jim Henson series Fraggle Rock.

Variety reports that the project will be a live-action musical. Staying true to the show, which aired from 1983-87, the flick will feature a mix of humans and puppets. Cory Edwards (Hoodwinked!) will direct and write the script.

In the film, the main characters Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red will venture outside their home in Fraggle Rock and presumably get up to all manner of Fraggle mischief.

The race of puppets believed that humans were aliens, so this could be an awakening for the googly-eyed creatures.

With its mix of differently coloured puppets and lighthearted feel, the series was able to tackle complex issues such as prejudice, the environment, social turmoil and identity while keeping kids glued to the screen (and singing its addictively poppy theme song).

Fraggle Rock was broadcast in more than 80 countries, though not many people realize it was filmed in Toronto. It was a co-production from Briain’s TVS, the CBC, HBO and Henson Associates (now Jim Henson Productions).

Its first three seasons have been released on DVD.

In other kiddie show news, Brandweek is reporting that Sesame Street will release a collection of children’s shoes in July. But they’re not just any shoes, they’re New Balance shoes.

The sneakers will be sold at retailers including Finish Line, Foot Locker, Hibbett Sports and others, in addition to New Balance stores.

Prices are set at $43 US for infant styles, and $65 US for grade school styles. Sorry, no adult sizes are available. And just when I was getting all excited about a pair of Oscar the Grouch sneaks.
