Award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns (The War) is back with another new documentary series that spouts what he feels is America’s best idea: national parks.

The 12-hour, six-part doc was filmed over the course of six years, and explores just why America should preserve the “most special places in the nation.”

“We appreciate an existential moment in our society,” Burns says. “The nature deficit disorder is a very real thing. The worst thing you want to have is nobody coming [to these parks], because that’s when that developer comes along and the park gets a little bit smaller. It’s amazing and what we hope is that we might get that renewal the parks continuously need every generation or so.”

The series starts in the mid-1800s and follows the evolution of the national park concept over the course of 150-odd years. It includes some of the most spectacular shots of the country, archived photos, first-person accounts, memories and analysis from over 50 interviews.

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea begins Sunday, Sept. 27, 8 p.m. ET, PBS and a new episode airs every night until Friday, Oct. 2, with immediate repeat episodes at 10 p.m.
