MTV unveiled two new series this morning, DJ AM’s latest project, Gone Too Far, and a reality series featuring four Canadian kids from Victoria, B.C., called The Buried Life.
To get into the mood for Gone Too Far, picture what The Cleaner would be like if it was a reality series. DJ AM, a recovered addict sober for over a decade now, reaches out to those who have hit rock bottom and tries to bring them back to life.
After surviving and overcoming addiction, not to mention surviving a plane crash and perhaps realizing he could do more with his life, DJ AM thinks he’s the ideal person for the job.
“There’s no reason why I lived and they didn’t,” he said of the six people who died in the plane crash he survived. “It’s something I struggle with every day. I here, I’m alive and I have another chance.”
He hopes to convey that message to others, as he firmly believes the best way to truly connect with addicts is by introducing them to someone who really understands that rock bottom level.
“I have an allergic reaction to drugs and alcohol, that’s how I look at it. I break out in handcuffs,” he says. “I was 300 and something pounds, I think I was the only fat crackhead around. I would be up all night doing drugs and then eating all day. For a long time I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror.”
But the DJ isn’t the only one aiming for inspiration this morning. Four Canadians from Victoria, B.C., took centre stage following DJ AM’s exit to talk about their latest series, The Buried Life.
Four years ago, the twentysomethings were all in college and trying to figure out what they were going to do with their lives. Collectively, they came up with a list of things they wanted to do, and decided to just go ahead and do it.
And so the boys started out across North America, crossing things off as they went along. Ironically, No. 54 on that list was to start a TV show, which MTV in the U.S. has now given them.
The Buried Life airs December on MTV U.S., and will inevitably make its way north shortly after.
