The king of Hispanic comedy is back with a brand new late night talk show, which is set to debut in November, and he’s not afraid to put it out there for critics.
In the most entertaining panel of the first day of the TV critic press your, George Lopez played the room a clip where the president himself, Barack Obama, endorses the new series, before Lopez addresses the crowd himself.
“It’s time to move it to the next level,” he says, making the reporters stand up before they could sputter out their questions. “[My show] doesn’t want to exclude anyone; there’s enough heavy things going on every day. I’m just trying to have a party.”
The series itself, much like a party, doesn’t seem to follow any specific format. As the comedian admits, if George Clooney shows up, people are going to want to see themselves lots of Clooney, not another premeditated monologue.
“It’s a good time. Don’t you agree there is room for a show like this?” he asks the room. “To be a Latino and to cross over to America is the most difficult thing to do.”
Lopez should know — according to him, there’s “a guy” who always gives him a hard time when he tries to re-enter the country; as a result, he is reportedly often held up at customs.
“There haven’t been that many late-night talk show hosts,” he says, turning serious. “In the diversity of it, as the country changes and people become more familiar with comedians, it’s not that old America anymore.”
