Pre-strike: Although no one really expected the young Clark Kent-based show to last as long as it did, Season 7 saw new life in the form of Kara. Superman’s cousin finally came to town, bringing fresh storylines and a sense of maturity to the show. As Clark realized his relationship to Kara and their bond grew, the storylines developed in a positive way, pushing the story forward and into the future. Which is the whole point of the show, when you think about it.
Post-strike: Although the show was only off the air for about a month (if you don’t include the last half of December, which is usually reserved for Christmas anyway), once it returned, it lost a little bit of its momentum. Kara’s amnesia was a little premature for me, Pete’s return to town was overshadowed by his convenient new superpower and the episode where Clark learned what life would be like if he never existed totally reminded me of A Christmas Carol. Thankfully, the Veritas group storyline has kept us going.
Character Development: Clark’s epiphanies and self-awareness continue to grow, while the underlying feelings of the females around him are constantly changing. We’ve seen Chloe and Lana both face some hard times and grow as a result, while Lex’s character is still intriguing.
Cliffhangers/Wrap Up: It’s official that Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) won’t be returning next season, so however writers decided to end this season, you know it’s going to be with a bang. If the two new villains are introduced in the right way for Season 8 – respecting the original Superman baddie – this could be a finale worth remembering.
