EXPEDITION AFRICA, Wednesdays, 10 p.m. ET, History Television

Debuts: Sept. 2

Who’s in it: Survivalist Benedict Allen; wildlife expert Mireya Mayor; navigator Pasquale Scaturro; and journalist Kevin Sites.

What’s it about: In this eight-episode series, four explorers journey into the deep interior of Tanzania, over 970 miles through African terrain, with only a compass and basic maps to guide them. Their goal? To retread journalist Henry Morton Stanley’s dangerous 1871 quest to find Dr. David Livingstone. Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Apprentice) serves as executive producer.

Reminds us of: Indiana Jones, with some Survivorman thrown in.

The buzz: Expedition Africa debuted in May in the U.S., and unlike most of Burnett’s other reality TV offerings, it’s not an elimination-based show. Burnett told Examiner.com that he collected more than 2,000 hours of footage for the show. And in an interview with TVGuide.ca, Mayor – who has a Ph.D. in anthropology – said that in her 10 years exploring far-flung destinations she’s never experienced anything close to Expedition Africa.
