And the envelopes, please: TV Guide.ca is proud to announce our third annual Soap Opera Spirit Award winners.
Last night, Michael Fairman presented the awards on a special, spirited podcast with Days of our Lives and Venice stars, Crystal Chappell and Galen Gering, hosting the ceremony.

Unlike the Daytime Emmy Awards, SOS winners (quite the ironic acronym, huh?) were not chosen for specific episodes submitted, but instead were judged on an entire year’s work.

A panel of TV Guide Canada editors chose the winners, and daytime guru Nelson Branco chose the esteemed nominees. Eligibility for the 2010 awards ran throughout the 2009 calendar year, with the exception of the web categories, which ended in February of this year.

In total, there were 130 nominations in 24 categories. In addition, there are three special editor awards, including the first annual Vanguard Award, along with our yearly Douglas Marland Memorial Award, and the Irna Phillips Soap Opera Spirit Award.

As for the big winners, for the second time, One Life To Live took home best show honours winning a whopping 11 SOS Awards. Coming in second was General Hospital with four statues. Following in the third place was The Young and the Restless with 3 honours. Below are the tallies — and winners.

Several actors pulled off multiple wins, including Chappell, who took home two Spirit Awards as Best Lead Actress and Best Performance By a Duo. One Life’s Trevor St. John repeated last year’s victory as Outstanding Lead Actor, as did GH’s Kirsten Storms as Best Younger Actress. Imaginary Bitches’ Eden Riegel won Best Actress in a Web Show or Special for the second consecutive year. One Life’s undefeated Tuc Watkins took him his third straight trophy for Outstanding Male Actor in a Recurring Role or Guest Star.

A special thanks goes out to Michael Fairman for producing and co-hosting the kudofest, along with Chappell and Gering for taking time out of their busy schedules to announce the winners.

If you didn’t catch the SOS Awards last night, it’s not too late. Head over to Michael Fariman’s On Air, On Soaps to listen to the suds ceremony to find out why Chappell stormed out of the podcast, and why Gering sounds like James Bond.

In addition, several award winners delivered their acceptance speeches on the air. The best part? Kanye West didn’t RSVP to the event. Whew.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees! Now don’t screw up the final Daytime Emmy Award nominations next month, kids!
