Before you go and get any preconceived notions about me, understand that I am not a huge fan of chick flicks. The typical guy meets girl, guy loses girl, guy wins back girl storyline is tired and cynical as far as I’m concerned.

But for so many reasons, I absolutely love How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Ladies, let’s be honest. Matthew McConaughey is, and always has been, nice to look at. He pretty much has the best abs in Hollywood, even if he does tend to bob his head around a lot while he acts. In 10 Days, there are a couple of gratuitous shirtless scenes, and while they aren’t the reason I love the movie, they definitely help build a case.

As for the female lead … let’s just say I developed somewhat of a female crush on Kate Hudson after watching her in this role. Andie Anderson is a wicked-cool female as far as I’m concerned, but boy did I laugh at the antics she put Ben (McConaughey) through.

For those who haven’t seen it, the premise is simple enough. Advertising executive Ben makes a bet with his boss that if he can make a woman fall in love with him within 10 days, then he gets to helm a new and prestigious diamond campaign. Meanwhile, Andie’s boss informs her that if she can write a piece about snagging a guy and losing him within 10 days, she will be free whatever she wants for one of America’s most up-and-coming women’s magazines.

Naturally the two cross paths and hilarity ensues.

The boys’ poker night is perhaps my most favourite scene in the entire movie, as it features a wacko version of Andie forcing the boys to put their cigars out, substituted “yucky, yucky, pizza” for “yummy” cucumber sandwiches, and freaking out at Ben for killing their “love fern.”

It’s a hilarious watch for first-timers, but also a fun re-watch for those who love to chill out to a good movie before a busy Saturday night out. And I swear, even though it comes across as a chick flick, guys love this one too.

Promise.
